The Miniature in chess parlance is a setting where the maximum number of chessmen has to be seven. In a chess problem the desired conclusion has to be reached in the stipulated number of moves, the rules being similar to the over-the-board play, unless otherwise stated. This collection contains 225 Miniatures—all two movers. The overall order followed in presenting problems is that of increasing number of white pieces. When two problems have exactly the same material, the older one comes first. The chess terms used in this collection have been defined as exhaustively as possible, some after the introduction and others in the body of the text where they first appear. There is also an index at the end, alphabetically giving authors' names with problem numbers.
